Gas Station Art

The gas station is probably the last place that one would expect to attract painters and other sorts of artists. The modern versions are rather cold and commercial, but back in the day the used to have their charm and the best proof are the gas station prints at Picasso.com. Virtually all the posters focus on the first half of the 20th century and they act as a window into the past, remembering people of how these places used to look.

Back in the day, gas stations were more of an oasis in the desert, because many decades ago these things meant something else than it does today. The gas station posters available at Picasso.com are mostly in black and white, which is hardly a surprise given the fact that they were taken in the 40s and even earlier. There were not as many cars back then and those who had the privilege of driving one, probably felt special when replenishing the tanks after a long voyage.

The gas station artwork projects an interesting image of a solitary place, where people seem to enjoy every single second spent. Decorating the walls of a living room or an office with gas station prints is a great solution if you have vintage furniture or anything that is complemented by black-and-white images. While most of the posters are depicting fictional gas stations, there are some featuring real places and this brings a feeling of authenticity to these images.
