Cross Art

Cross pictures include paintings that depict the Passion of Jesus when He was being crucified. Several masterpieces have been done in this category of art, including works by Durer, Rubens, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Bellini, and El Greco. Crucifix art is commonly used in households, though it isn't unusual to see some version of cross art in a church. Despite this, most Christian's still adopt this art category for their purposes because of the familiar biblical stories and faith-affirming messages embodied in the majority of imagery that make up this art style's content. A large portion of biblical scene art has content from various stories of the Bible, such as Daniel in the lion's den, Noah's ark, the Garden of Eden, and the Last Supper, in addition to biblical figures like angels. However, biblical scene art doesn't necessarily have to be literal and there is a lot of art in this category that addresses themes of faith, hope, overcoming trials, blessings and prayer as well as contemporary works that quote actual verses from various biblical texts. The image of the crucifix helps to remind believers of the devotion that Jesus Christ had for them and the sacrifice that He made on their behalf.

Curiously, the cross is becoming more of a religious icon than Christ himself when it comes to crucifix art. Whereas traditional artists tried to depict the event of the Passion, contemporary artists are looking more into what the Passion means through cross paintings in the everyday lives of people.

Themes of faith, family, friends, hope, and salvation are all common themes in contemporary cross art. Although there are still several modern artists who use traditional ways to communicate the Passion, typically these paintings will be focused on the Resurrection or on the ways that Jesus proved that He was the Son of God, rather than His death on the cross. However, in the same way that the cross has become an icon for the Passion, it has also become a symbol that is frequently used in paintings featuring religious areas, such as a landscape painting featuring a church or mission, and is a symbol of hope amid despair.
